Mindfulness is a popular form of mental training created in the 1970s by Jon Kabat-Zinn from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. It is described as the practice of intentionally focusing one’s attention on the present moment without judgment. Mindfulness involves being aware of what is happening in the external environment, being aware of our internal thoughts and feelings, and accepting these experiences as they are without judgment or criticism. Mindfulness is not about trying to change or avoid the present moment, instead, it is about learning to accept and observe what is.

Mindfulness is grounded in the Buddhist tenets of compassion and non-judgment. Buddhists have practiced mindfulness for thousands of years to cultivate inner peace. The modern Westernized concept of mindfulness was popularized by Jon Kabat-Zinn and his Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program in the late 1970s.
